U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and a group of her colleagues have taken a stand by leading a letter to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, demanding a Senate trial for U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas' impeachment. The call for action emphasizes the Senate's constitutional obligation to conduct a thorough trial after the House impeached Mayorkas earlier in the month.
"Under Secretary Mayorkas' failed leadership, dangerous cartels have assumed control of the southwest border, rolling out the red carpet for people on the terror watchlist and flooding our communities with lethal drugs. We cannot allow him to continue to hide from the consequences of this administration's open-door policies," Senator Lummis stated.
The Senator highlighted the importance of upholding the law and holding officials accountable, saying, "The Senate has a constitutional obligation to conduct a thorough trial which examines the Secretary's willful and repeated refusal to uphold the law, and I urge Republican leadership not to stand idly by as Senator Schumer attempts to sweep this dereliction of duty under the rug."
Senator Lummis was joined by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Mike Braun (R-IN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Ted Budd (R-NC) in sending the letter urging for a Senate trial for Mayorkas' impeachment.
